Is A Course in Advertising Photography Helpful?

Many a time, young and enthusiastic people interested in advertising photography ask me – whether it is necessary to get a formal training in advertising photography, whether they should go to a photography school and slog for 3- 4 years and get a degree that would certify their prowess over the subject.
My reply to all of them – go if you have to! While it is no compulsion to get a degree or certificate that will prove your talent, on the other hand, keeping today's ad world and market in mind, a tangible proof of your knowledge and talent helps gain an advantage. Many an expert in advertising photography, that I know of, never visited any school of photography as a student. They learnt with work.
You can choose to do that, or if you are not able to shell out the fees money for such a course, you can also get a hands on by assisting some of the professionals in advertising photography.
